We’re All Going On A Summer Holiday vs. Punk Routine Perfectionism

summerholiday-punkroutineDaily updates on hold until July 27th with a Braid live review. Like one of those TV episodes where they recycle clips of old shows, I’ll take a moment to pick favourites from the last few months of blogging. Although if you’re asking me if the honeymoon period is over, my reply is always the same – there was a honeymoon period?

Yes, it’s a Cliff Richard meets Refused mashup theme. The line between love/hate, cool/uncool, fun/super-serious is always close to a full 360 degree turn. And the Universe loves a pattern.

Long before Pet Piranha Records was a thing, I used to blog over at blogspot. Writing nonsense off the top of my head gave me an outlet which I enjoyed. It was only when people started telling me they were reading it that I decided to stop. That was before social media existed. Now most people are on Facebook so if you’re looking for attention and/or validation from friends and peers then you don’t have to go very far.

AGAINST PERFECTION

I often joke with friends that I now see myself as a recovering perfectionist. It’s likely to be the theme of an upcoming ‘Creative Minds’ blogpost. I have a few ideas I’d like to explore in that respect.

At the risk of getting all Supernatural Superserious on your asses, you can only medicate yourself so much with music and sugar. And I’ve managed to wean myself off sugar.

The books of Brené Brown are eye-opening and as a shame researcher she provides startling insight into areas of our own being that we try hard to pretend do not exist. ‘The Gifts of Imperfection’ book describes so many traits I recognise not only in myself but in many of my peers that you realise how much implied expectation we carry from parents, family, friends as well as who we ourselves think we’re supposed to be.

All of which is bullshit we don’t have to carry around.

The framed Adorable poster on my wall says Against Perfection. Because decisions created out of fear don’t help us to move forward. And where fear exists, hardcore denial usually follows.

Disagree? Try being non-judgemental about people for one hour. Seriously, see how you get on. We don’t even realise how often over the course of a single day we judge everyone and everything around us. Some people even turn the trait into their career.
