We Need To Talk About Digital Music Economics

tape-150pxHow can musicians make money in 2014? That’s the question facing a lot of up and coming bands and artists. Should they expect music to pay their mortgage or is it time to accept that sustainable artistic growth requires a different mindset?

The theme of digital music economics is likely to feature throughout 2014 on this blog. Technology has empowered artists to be creative in new low-cost ways and to reach audiences anywhere that can access the internet. The rapid growth of streaming services has led to the inevitable debate between music industry figureheads such as Thom Yorke and Moby as regards getting paid and expectations around that.

Back on Episode 17 of Future Library, experienced tech journo Gary Marshall talked about the music industry and how our attitudes have evolved with access to unlimited music.

Earlier this evening BBC Radio 4′s In Business programme attempted to tackle this thorny topic – “Is the problem of small returns from songs streamed actually a clash between a new way of listening to music and the traditional way the industry has been run?”

The BBC programme will be available to hear online shortly. Thanks to Fraser Simpson for sharing this info on Facebook.
