Glasgow Psych Fest 2013 This Weekend

his-name-is-codeine-200613Glasgow’s psychedelic movement celebrates this weekend with live bands over two days including one of my recent faves, HIS NAME IS CODEINE. That’s reason enough to write a preview.

The good, the bad and the confused will likely all take part in this weekend’s Glasgow Psych Fest.

Describing itself as “Bringing together Psych bands from all over the UK to celebrate Glasgow’s psychedelic movement“, the two day showcase for bands kicks off tomorrow (Friday). I’m not sure there is a movement as such but it’s a banner for unsigned bands to get together and play some shows.

The Art School union and Nice n Sleazy is where it’s all taking place. Tickets are £10 for both days Fri 21st / Sat 22nd – and £6 for for day tickets only. Tickets can be purchased on the door at the venues when you arrive.

And why should you care, you might ask?

Well, if you go downstairs in the Art School on Saturday at precisely 10:15pm you can bear witness to a band that will make your night all out the more memorable. It is of course, HIS NAME IS CODEINE.

With their new album released and sadly not much in the way of buzz surrounding it, I feel compelled to remind you all that if you can get past the bandname (FFS yesterday’s band name was The Murderburgers! It doesn’t get any better or worse than that) and the super earnest album title “The Only Truth Is Music” – then, and only then shall ye find enlightenment.

Seeing as it’s Thursday and we’ve all had a long week, I’ll break it down for you James Brown style.

Step 1: Go listen to HIS NAME IS CODEINE

Step 2: Realise that they’re extremely promising as a young, unsigned band. Otherwise, repeat Step 1 until Step 2 occurs.

Step 3: Go to The Art School on Saturday and watch some bands downstairs, ensuring you are there before 10.15pm.

That’s it. In three easy steps you too can find enlightenment and unburden your heart from all of your daily grindings. Or at the very least get blind drunk and wake up beside a stranger the next day before going home. It is the weekend.

Sloth Metropolis have just released our début E.P., ‘Departure’.

A Glasgow based eclectic and eccentric electric-fiddle driven rock band with heavy doses of psych, prog and folk, telling surreal yet socially conscious stories of bucky drinking sloths, scaly reptile queens, and modern Aristotles.

The E.P. Can be streamed on our website.
